So, there we have it! The 2019-2020 PGA Tour season has officially come to a close, and it’s no surprise who is sitting up top. Dustin Johnson came into the tournament on one of the hottest streaks golf has seen in some time. Starting all the way back at the Fedex St. Jude, DJ went T-12, T-2, Win, and 2nd place finishes. Could he continue this amazing stretch and take home the FedEx Cup?
After round one, it was too close to call. John Rahm had an immense day, shooting a 5-under 65 to tie DJ at the top of the leaderboard. It looked like the battle from Olympia Fields was going to continue down at East Lake.
Unfortunately for Rahm, round two was not so kind. In fact, the 2nd round wasn’t very nice to anyone. Now as we all know, the 30 best golfers from the season are invited to the Tour Championship. But that doesn’t mean we don’t get to see some absolutely insane golf is hard moments.
Round Three was when DJ decided to once again become superman, and increased his lead to five strokes into the final round. Many people, myself included, thought it was all over. But Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas didn’t hear the bell and came out FLYING in the fourth round.
Unfortunately for these two, it was too-little, too-late. DJ had been steady all day, and while he wasn’t the stone-cold killer he had been during round 3, he did what he had to do to keep his lead and pull away with the victory.
And, of course, it’s always nice to celebrate with a partner like Paulina Gretzky.
With this victory, DJ closes out the 2019-2020 season in dominating fashion. DJ ALMOST became the first player to sweep the FedEx Cup playoffs, and finished his year finishing in the top 5 in four of his last five events. The biggest question now is this: can he continue this form into the US Open in two weeks time?
Now, on a personal note, I am happy that DJ came out here these past two weeks and proved me wrong. Ever since his win at the Northern Trust, I’ve been saying he can’t continue this elite level of play. Well, I was 100% in the wrong on this one. So a big congratulations to DJ on this FedEx Cup victory!
